In the modern era Technology is all around us, used by many in the workforce and for people's convenience and leisure. Without a doubt technology is what is keeping us moving towards the future but have we ever stopped to talk about the bigger picture? All what we have been truly thinking about is how this little piece of technology like an iPhone is what it brings to me. Will people acknowledge me, will people talk about how cool I am and how insane the performance is compared to another device. This is few of many things we acknowledge with the privilege we are given when we obtain such a precious piece of technology but have we ever thought about what happens before and after it reaches our possession? What Truly Happens?Take for example so basically I used to have an iPhone 8 and the key terms that I used are "Used To" and I basically had no care in the world. I won't lie that I didn't cherish my device as much as I should have because I usually kept my phone in my top pocket and I can't even count the number of times I had dropped it. Now that I am in need of a new phone I had contemplated about replacing it with an upgrade instead of trying to fix it with no care about the cost and consequences. My thought process was thrown into a spiral when I found out about the process that goes into the production of these devices and what happens to them after they are disposed off. At the beginning with the production of, in this scenario an IPhone, in any case of a production of a device of this caliber there would be negative impacts to the environment. Like did you know Apple(company for the IPhone) totaled about 23 million metric tons of CO2 in the year of 2021? and don't get me started on the compounds used to make them as some of these are rare metals. As the name suggests they are rare which means they are hard to find and the more IPhone made the less we see of these compounds which are also impossible to recycle. Aside from the impact on the environment we have to think about the workers involved in the process. Judging from IPhone company Apple it would be safe to assume that the workers are being treated well and fairly but it is the total opposite. From various news outlets and articles it is seen that Apple factory workers are overworked, have terrible living conditions and barely get paid. It says a lot when the people who made your phone can't even afford it, the situation has gotten so bad that workers are contemplating on ending their own life. How Do We Feel And What We Can Do?After hearing all of this, it really makes you think about the technology you have. It doesn't matter if its even an IPhone this pertains to all sources of technology. All of these negative impacts on our environment, the people involved in producing our devices and is it worth it? For me I believe that sacrifices are obviously needed to move us towards the future but undermining the fruits of their labor is outrageous. I personally believe that we should take precious care of our the technology bestowed onto us and try our utmost best into maximizing the life span of these devices and even finding new ways of being able to recycle them for further use. I am deeply regretful for what I have thought of my IPhone and the only way for me to pay respect is to make the work put into the iPhone worth something. The real question now is how could you keep the trend and how companies around the world could better the lives of workers and provide more positives than negatives to the environment.
